PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
by Christopher Price, P.E.
Spring is in the air and the
madness of March is upon us! Whether you're interested in warmer weather,
basketball, the legislative activities in Topeka or the exciting rush of
KSPE activities, March has something to offer for all of us.
There has been much going on
within our organization and many great things are yet to come through the
spring. Chapter activities are always busy this time of year, with
chapter meetings, Model Bridge building contests, Legislative Luncheons,
E-week activities and MATHCOUNTS. The MATHCOUNTS competition throughout the
state will culminate with the state contest in Salina on March 8. This
year’s MATHCOUNTS competition will be Don Taylor’s 25th and last as state
MATHCOUNTS chair. The leadership that Don has exhibited and his commitment
to the program are both phenomenal. Thank you, Don, for your model of
servant leadership that we all can see and appreciate!
Your KSPE state board has
been busy dealing with KSPE strategic planning issues, legislative issues
and renewing our relationship with the Kansas State Board of Technical
Professions. We are well into the planning process for conducting a
Licensure Recognition Ceremony to be held in conjunction with the KSBTP this
summer. As KSPE members, we all recognize that professional licensure is
very important for the State of Kansas. Those individuals who dedicate
their careers toward the improvement of their profession and society through
licensure should be duly recognized. The event will be a prestigious
recognition ceremony to highlight the level of achievement in a memorable
fashion.
Planning is also being
finalized for the 2008 KSPE Spring Conference on Project Management to be
held in Emporia on April 4. The event will include a great combination of
speakers bringing different perspectives on the topic of project management,
along with the opportunity to gain professional development hours. Mark
your calendar for a day of learning and networking.
With spring comes the spirit
of renewal. You may plan to renew your gardening activities, your outdoor
activities or your sporting activities. Either way, please plan to renew
your KSPE activities by keeping involved in the rush of upcoming events. I
look forward to seeing each of you through the next months!

Take the 2008 Milton F.
Lunch Ethics Contest Challenge
All current NSPE individual
members, NSPE state societies, and NSPE chapters (including student
chapters) are invited to participate in the
2008 NSPE Milton F. Lunch
Ethics Contest. Here's your opportunity to match your wits with experienced
P.E.s and engineering students throughout the country!
Contestants are encouraged to
analyze the facts of a real situation involving the ethical obligation of an
engineer when a client fails to obtain necessary building permits and code
approvals. Contestants must develop discussion and conclusions about the
ethics of the engineer in the case using the format of the NSPE Board of
Ethical Review. Entries must be 750 words or less and must be received at
NSPE Headquarters by Friday, April 18, 2008.
The winning entry will
receive a certificate, recognition in PE Magazine, and an award of $1,000
($500 to the NSPE state society or NSPE chapter and $500 divided among the
authors), provided by NSPE and the NSPE Educational Foundation.
Judges will decide the winner
based on quality of the entry in form and presentation; demonstration of
understanding of the implications concerning ethical or unethical behavior;
and comprehensive analysis of the case and arguments supporting your
conclusions.
The contest is named for
NSPE’s former general counsel, who played a key role in the founding of the
NSPE Board of Ethical Review.
Please visit the "Ethics"
section of the NSPE Web site

State Board Approves
License Recognition Event
The Kansas State Board of
Technical Professions unanimously agreed at its recent Board meeting to
participate with KSPE and other interested technical organizations in
conducting a professional license recognition event. Details are still being
finalized for this historic event, the first in Kansas in more than 20
years. Plans are still being completed, but look for an event in June or
July. Interest is high among Land Surveyors and Architects to join
Professional Engineers. We are hoping to grow the event into a recognition
time for all new technical professional licensees. Stacey Lamer, P.E., of
the Topeka Chapter heads the KSPE planning effort.
