Kansas Society of Professional Engineers

Report to:  KSPE October 19, 2001 Board Meeting

By:  Ben Jackson, KS MATHCOUNTS Coordinator

1. As of October 16, we have 20 teams plus 57 individuals registered – 6 Wichita, 8 Eastern, 2 Southeast and 4 Topeka. Registration reports to the Chapter Coordinators started with the 16 October update.

2. On October 5 (last minute rescheduling from October 4) Ben Jackson presented a MATHCOUNTS workshop session to teachers attending the KS Association for the Gifted, Talented and Creative Annual Conference in Topeka.

3. On October 19 Mark Borst will attend the Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics annual convention in Wichita. We have about 50 sets of school materials to distribute, and MATHCOUNTS will have a table among exhibitors. Unlike last year's meeting, KATM waived the exhibitor fee for MATHCOUNTS this year.

4. The State contest is scheduled for March 9 in Salina at the Bicentennial Center. Chapter contest dates will be established over the next few months.

5. A website with practice problems designed for MATHCOUNTS students was received. The site has been reviewed by Phyllis Hoyt, Topeka Collegiate, Coach's Advisory Council member, and is being made available to coaches upon registration. The URL is http://mathcounts.saab.org/mc.cgi

6. I had not heard discussion of university open house visits, but the invitation could be extended to registered MATHCOUNTS schools very easily.  The registration reports that I receive include Email addresses for the coach. The students (6th, 7th, and 8th grades) would be accompanied by parents (more likely) or teacher and would need a host for at least part of their visit. I'll include Greg on distribution of the school registration reports.

A related idea that Don Taylor has promoted, and I support, is for the KS Schools of Engineering to offer non transferable scholarships in the amount of tuition or more $ to the top 6 or 8 or 10 students at the state MATHCOUNTS contest. Even in the top 20 students (the top 5% of middle school math students in the state) the schools would attract some very talented people, and pick up some excellent exposure in the meantime.  There is still time to implement this at the 2002 contest.!! The first students to accept would appear in fall 2006.
